Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
The de Heaulmes have initiated numerous pioneering sustainable tourism projects. Starting in 1937, they opened a private reserve in the forest of the Mandradre river, now of world renown and featuring an Atandroy museum.They also safeguard the vestiges of Fort Flacourt, those of the Portuguese fort in the small island of Santa Cruz, the botanical garden of Sayadi, and also a large forest of baobab trees close to Morondave.
On a social level, their effort is "foremost to explain, and involve people in their own future", says Jean de Heaulme. It is also to develop local employment: the family hire very few westerners among the executives (70% of them come from Tana, 30% from Fort Dauphin), and they have an 50/50 objective. In 1986, the family was awarded the John Paul Getty Prize for Conservation.
