Tonga soa! Welcome to Fort Dauphin!
Fort Dauphin or Tolagnaro (also written Taolanaro or Tolanaro) is a city in the province of Tulear, capital of the Anosy region, located in the southeast of the island of Madagascar, about 1122 km from Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar.
The city is nestled on a narrow piece of coastline, bordered on one side by lush vegetation and the other by the golden beaches of the Indian Ocean. Fort Dauphin is unquestionably one of the most beautiful sites in Madagascar: an oasis of greenery that pops to the desert, a mirage that appears after the grueling hours of bush taxi from Tulear or Antananarivo.
The city is a historic town which retains vestiges of the past. A walk in the colonial city is required for history lovers. It was long occupied by the European during the seventeenth century. The city name comes from the fort of the same name, built by the French in 1643. The Fort Dauphin, having served as a trading post was named in honor of King Louis XIV.
