Tonga soa! Welcome to Tulear!
Tulear is a city in the southwest coast of Madagascar. the capital of the region Atsimo-Andrefana (South-West) and the old province of Toliara. It is located 936 km southwest of Antananarivo.
Tulear is located on a broad coastal plain, surrounded by dunes and mangrove swamps near the Tropic of Capricorn in the Mozambique Channel. Off extends a long barrier reef (the Great Reef) 18 km long and 3 km wide. Tulear is nicknamed the "City of the Sun" because it has a hot (28 °C average) and semi-arid climate, with less than 400 mm annual rainfall. The city is constantly swept by a strong wind dominating the Tsiokatimo (South Wind).
The tourism sector is very promising and booming thanks to the climate and natural assets of the hinterland (Ifaty Anakao, St Augustin...). Calm seas and shallow 2-10 m averaged promote activities such as scuba diving.
Among the interesting sites on the spot, Isalo National Park is within driving distance of Tulear, 250km to the North West.
